What makes a good movie reviewer?
Usually, before watching a movie, I'll go onto rotten tomatoes and start reading up some of the reviews to the movie. I know... some people hate it as it gives away a lot of the movie. But that's me. I like knowing what i'm gonna watch. And loyal readers (i think i can count those with a disfigured hand...) of mine will know that i too, love to write about some of the movies i've seen. Its inevitable that reviews will be slightly prejudiced, or personal. No matter how objectively you look at a movie, personal preferences and taste will still creep in. When reviewing a movie, do you then watch it and comment purely from your own angle and views and preferences, or do you take into consideration the movie's target audience? If i were a conservative older man or woman watching American Pie vs a young, hot blooded 19 year old, our take-outs from the movie will be very different, and ultimately, the conclusion on whether the movie was worth the money, will also be very different. And I believe that reviewers should skew their thoughts and views towards the audience at large that the movie is trying to attract, in order to give a more objective movie review that will help readers in deciding if a movie is worth the trip. |
